The Words We Speak
Gossip may sometimes seem trivial, but it carries the potential to wound deeply and create division.
2 Timothy 2:23-26; 2 Timothy 3:1-5
Many view gossip as a minor offense, especially when compared to more serious sins like theft or deceit. However, Scripture places gossip in the same category as these transgressions (Romans 1:28-31), revealing its true significance in God’s eyes.
There is nothing harmless about gossip. Whether spoken with malice or simply as casual chatter, it can cause embarrassment, pain, and lasting harm. Even if the subject of the conversation never hears what was said, gossip still leaves its mark—it exposes the heart of the one speaking. In Matthew 12, Jesus teaches, “For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart” (Matthew 12:34). Words of gossip often stem from jealousy, bitterness, or pride, and they can damage relationships, tarnish reputations, and even divide families and churches.
As followers of Christ, we should refuse to take part in such destruction. So how should we respond when we hear gossip? Instead of engaging, we should turn to God. Pray for those being spoken about, asking Him to shield them from harm. Also, pray for the one spreading gossip, that their heart may be transformed. Above all, let us commit to lifting others up with our words rather than tearing them down (Galatians 6:2).
